Allianz wraps up stormy first year in West Des Moines

September 10, 2001 By admin

After battling the elements for several days the Allianz Championship finished in the sunshine. Jim Thorpe claimed his second straight victory on the senior tour by firing a five under par 66 for a two-stroke victory. Thorpe ran off seven birdies in an 11-hole stretch to build a large cushion in the final round to pick up 265-thousand dollars, his largest single pay day as a pro. Gil Morgan fired a final round 65 to finish second at 12-under par. Bruce Lietzke finished third.
