Governor says tuition increase is reasonable

September 10, 2001 By admin

Iowa’s chief executive calls the double-digit tuition increase proposed for the state-supported universities “reasonable.” Governor Tom Vilsack says he’s comfortable with the 12 percent increase proposed in tuition and fees for students at Iowa, Iowa State and U-N-I.Nine out of ten students at the three state schools get some form of financial aid, and Vilsack says tuition for out-of-state students is attracting scores of students from neighboring states where tuition’s more expensive. He says that shows the tuition isn’t out of line.Vilsack says Iowa taxpayers are making a “significant commitment” to higher education, and students are paying a reasonable share through their tuition. The Board of Regents will discuss the tuition increase at its meeting this week, but won’t make a decision until October.
