Iowa’s only nuclear plant takes extra security precautions

September 12, 2001 By admin

Iowa’s only nuclear power plant took extra security measures in the hours after the terrorist attack in New York. The Duane Arnold Energy Center activated a security plan as news arrived Tuesday morning of apparent terrorist attacks in the eastern U-S. Maureen Brown is with the management company that operates several Upper Midwest nuclear plants. She says workers who weren’t vital went home yesterday so guards could limit people coming and going. By Wednesday, the full staff was back on the job, but Brown says that doesn’t mean there weren’t security measures in place. There are standard rules to prevent incursions at Duane Arnold, so staff was well prepared to take the steps done this week. Duane Arnold in Palo is Iowa’s only nuclear power plant.
