Sioux City Senator hopes to win 5th District seat

September 19, 2001 By admin

Sioux City Senator John Redwine has officially entered the race for the republican nomination for the new fifth-district congressional seat. Redwine says he can use his local and state political experience to represent western Iowa. Redwine says he’s been effective in the Senate and can use the experience in Congress.Redwine, who’s a doctor, says he’s found people in the district confused about the rising cost of healthcare.Redwine has stepped down from his position at a Sioux City hospital to run for Congress. He says lawmakers face tough times ahead, but he’s heartened by what he’s heard from constituents who’ve voiced support for the country. The new fifth district will not have an incumbent congressman vying for the seat, but Redwine will have plenty of competition for the nomination. Other republicans running include, House Speaker Brent Siegrist and Council Bluffs businessman Jeff Ballenger. State Senator Steve King of Kiron has said he’s interested in running. Council Bluffs City Councilman Paul Shomshor is the only democrat to announce a run for the new fifth district.
