Boswell backs airline bail out package

September 21, 2001 By admin

Congressman Leonard Boswell says the U-S House is working on a package to help the airlines recover from last week’s terrorist attacks. Boswell says the airlines can’t be allowed to fail. He says it’s more than a matter of people traveling, it’s a matter of commerce.Boswell, a democrat, says the plan will include an infusion of cash to keep the airlines going. The plan also would guarantee loans for the airlines until they can pay them back. Boswell says the price tag for the help hasn’t been set, but it will be billions. Boswell was asked whether some airlines that were failing before the attacks may be helped by the money. He says that may be, but he says it’s important to save the industry.Boswell says one thing Iowans can do is to continue flying. He says we’ll also need to get used to tighter security. Boswell says that security was evident when he returned recently from Washington and one of his traveling companions was taken aside and had his luggage searched.Boswell says travelers should be “cautious and aware” as they fly again, but he says we should try to return to living our lives. Boswell is a member of the House Transportation Committee.
