Fiery Crash Closes I-35

October 9, 2001 By admin

An accident closed Interstate 35 near Ames for a few hours today. The wreck happened on an I-35 overpass and two vehicles crashed onto Highway 30 below. Investigators believe a pickup merging onto the Interstate swerved, perhaps because rain had made the pavement slick. A semi behind tried to avoid it, but both trucks went through the guardrail and crashed onto the highway below. The semi’s flatbed trailer hung up on the guardrail, leaving it dangling from the overpass above. The semi driver was pulled from the wreckage and taken to a local hospital. A person in the pickup has died.
