The first phase of Iowa’s newest wind farm is up and running. The “Top of Iowa Wind Farm” is located in the Worth County town of Joice. Northern Iowa Windpower operations manager Jen Guarino says they reached a milestone today.
The last rotor blade was put on the last turbine, capping construction in which 89 turbines were built in under six months. Guarino says they have a contract to sell all the power.
Alliant Energy is buying the power the wind farm.
Another 50 towers will be production energy by tomorrow. The turbines are scattered around the western part of Worth County. The 90-million dollar wind farm will product about 80 megawatts of energy a year. That’s enough to power about 40-thousand homes. The second phase, which includes 88 more turbines, will start in the spring.
