State transportation officials are trying to inspire young Iowans to think about flying — and transform their thoughts into artwork. The Iowa D-O-T is now accepting entries for the 2002 International Aviation Art Contest. Brochures were sent out this week to 12-hundred Iowa art teachers.
Roy Criss is the spokesman for the Iowa D-O-T’s Aviation Office. He says art teachers statewide should now have the contest information in their classrooms along with entry forms. Criss says the theme of this year’s contest is “Silent Flight”.
Criss says the contest is designed to help children get interested in aeronautics, engineering and science. The art they submit does not need to be limited to conventional aircraft or spacecraft either, but their imaginations should be allowed to run wild.
There are three age categories: 6-9, 10-13 and 14-17, which are determined by the contestants’ ages on December 31, 2001. All entries must be postmarked by January 7th, 2002.
