State anti-tobacco program won’t add a new wrinkle

October 15, 2001 By admin

The state’s “Just Eliminate Lies” anti-smoking campaign will not mimic a popular ad campaign in Europe.
A new anti-smoking ad campaign in Europe focuses on research that finds smoking causes wrinkles. Cathy Calloway of the Iowa Department of Public Health says testing shows that message doesn’t really “resonate” with young Iowans who are the target audience for the “Just Eliminate Lies” campaign.
Calloway says messages about second-hand smoke, nicotine addiction and the way the tobacco industry has manipulated customers seem to be more successful in convincing young Iowans not to smoke. Calloway can’t name a date, but she says data will be released soon showing the Iowa teen smoking rate.
