Iowa State and Iowa enter weekend games with different momentum

October 17, 2001 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes will look to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday when they host Indiana. despite a subpar performance from quarterback Kyle McCann last week in a loss at Michigan State, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says he has not considered a change at quarterback. He says they have a confidence level with Kyle McCann that they don’t have with the other quarterbacks.
Ferentz says how much the Hawkeyes improve will depend on the offensive line and McCann. He says the common denominator in all offenses is how well linemen block.
Ferentz says special teams play has been disappointing and changes will be made this week. He says he takes the blame for overestimating the job that some players could do. He says he is concerned with having some players play too much.
The Iowa State Cyclones will be at home against Oklahoma State. The Cyclones are 4-1 after a win at Missouri. Over the past two seasons, the Cyclones are seven-and-oh in games decided by ten points or less. Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says the more close games the Cyclones win, the more confidence they gain. He says they’re already seeing the confidence in this young team.
The Cyclones are just two victories away from being bowl eligible, but McCarney says it’ll be difficult to say there is a certain point when the program has completely turned around. He says he feels good about the program and believes if they get more wins in the next few weeks, it bodes well for the future.
The Cowboys are led by quarterback Aso (ah’-soh) Pogi (poh’-geye), and McCarney says their 2-4 record is deceiving.
