Corallville standoff ends peacefully

October 18, 2001 By admin

A four-hour police standoff ended peacefully last night in Coralville. 29-year-old Milford Tarter Junior, of Washington (Iowa), allegedly robbed a Shakey’s Pizza restaurant at gunpoint around 2 p-m, then ran to a nearby self-service car wash and hid in his car. Police surrounded the stall with weapons drawn and talked with Tarter for several hours. He surrendered around 6 p-m with no shots fired. Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford says Tarter was hurt with cuts to his hand and an injury to his shoulder.
Tarter was taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City for treatment before being taken to the Johnson County Jail.
