National Guard troops are beefing up security at the state hygienic lab in Iowa City. University of Iowa Public-Safety Director Chuck Green says the order came down from state administration.
The governor thought it was important, so the National Guard and state troopers were assigned, though the troopers have now left. Green says for now, campus security people and the Guard remains.
Green says the U-of-I’s public safety department is monitoring safety campus wide as well as at the lab.
He won’t say what security measures, but people have to show an ID, sign in, or somehow prove they’re supposed to be at the lab. The Guard was first ordered to provide security at the state hygienic lab after reports the anthrax discovered in Florida had come from Iowa. Though that has been questioned now, guard members remain.
