Students at an eastern Iowa school are releasing red balloons this morning to promote a drug-free lifestyle as part of Red Ribbon Week. Jill McDermott is a guidance counselor at Maquoketa Valley Middle School. She says the huge batch of balloons will each carry special messages.
In addition to promoting anti-drug messages, the slips of paper also contain the school’s address. McDermott hopes whoever finds the balloons will contact the school and let them know how far away they are. She says there’s another reason for promoting this event.
The school doesn’t want anyone to be scared by seeing the red balloons floating around. The balloons should be visible for miles right after their release in a big clump.
