Stakeout ends up in shootout in Southeast Iowa

October 22, 2001 By admin

Law officers in southeast Iowa -almost- caught suspected methamphetamine makers in the act of stealing a key ingredient over the weekend.
A stakeout turned into a shoot-out early Saturday near Batavia. Jefferson County deputies were watching a storage area of anhydrous ammonia and saw someone steal a portion. Upon confronting the two suspects, deputies were nearly run down and then fired shots at the fleeing vehicle. The car was found in a ditch a short time later but no one was inside. The suspects are still at large.
