Teachers writes song to deal with terrorism fears

October 22, 2001 By admin

A middle school art teacher in southwest Iowa has written a song about September 11th which her art class has recorded — and is now selling to raise money for charity.
49-year-old Becky Poen says writing the lyrics to the song “How Will I Get Home?” and strumming the guitar helped her overcome some of the anguish of watching the T-V news reports of the terrorist attack.
Poen says her students at Stanton Junior/Senior High were eager to sing it. She says the “pure, clear, beautiful” voices of the seventh graders brought the song a needed element — “the hope of youth.” Poen and her students have already sold about 200 recordings of the song on compact discs for five dollars each.
She says all proceeds will go to New York to help replace fire equipment damaged in the attack. The chorus includes lines like “We will pull together to share our prayer/We will pull together to make a better day.”
