The playoff field will be determined after the final night of the high school football regular season. In class 4A, tenth-ranked Mason City is 6-2 but the Mohawks may need to beat seventh-ranked Newton to gain a playoff berth. Mason City coach John Lee says it has been a great year either way.The Mohawks will finish above the 500-mark for the first time in 16 years, and Lee says it’s taken a lot of work to gain back the respect Mason City High football had back in the late 1970s and early ’80s. He says the last two years they’ve won only 3 games. He says he saw the team play the year it won a championship and seeing them down was disappointing.Bob Fisher, KRIB Mason, CityAfter a successful run at WACO, Lonnie Powers took over a Knoxville program that finished 2-7 a year ago. The Panthers are 4-2 in district six and visit 5-1 South Tama. The winner gets the runner-up spot into the 3A playoffs. He says that makes this the caliber of a playoff game.Powers says their passing game has improved throughout the season and will be needed against the Trojans.
