Congressman Jim Leach was among a small group who met recently with an Iranian Ambassador to discuss whether ties between the U-S and Iran can be strengthened. He says realistically from the U-S point of view, total isolation of Iran doesn’t work for either side.Iran and the U-S have no formal diplomatic relations, but the Iranian government has given permission for American jets to fly over Iran. Iran has never recognized the Taliban as a legitimate government, and Leach says the remaining sticking point in U-S/Iranian relations is Iran’s support of Palestinian insurgents. He says if we can reach a settlement with the Palestinians, he’s optimistic about relations with Iran.Leach, who is a member of the House International Relations Committee, made his comments during an appearance on FOX news on cable t-v.
