Iowa artists, historians, cultural groups and communities have been awarded “American Spirit Project” grants to chronicle the events of September 11th.A quarter-of-a-million dollars was handed out in 39 grants. Governor Tom Vilsack says there were 91 applications.Vilsack says it gives Iowans an opportunity to celebrate what we have in common — a love for our country.Department of Cultural Affairs director Anita Walker launched the “American Spirit” initiative the week after the attacks in New York and D-C.
