Congressman calls again for quick action on airport security

November 12, 2001 By admin

Congressman Greg Ganske, a republican from Des Moines, says Congress and the President need to act quickly to provide better security at the nation’s airports — especially with today’s plane crash in New York. So far, investigators say all signs point to mechanical problems, not any terrorist involvement, in today’s New York crash. Senate Democrats and Republicans unanimously voted to make ALL security workers at airports federal employees, but most Republicans in the U-S House rejected that idea. Ganske is one of a handful of House Republicans want federal employees to start doing the security screening because the private companies aren’t doing the job. He cites the incident a week ago when a man got knives through an airport in Chicago.Ganske says the vast majority of Iowans who talk to him want federal workers doing airport security. A special committee of U-S House and Senate members are meeting, trying to forge a compromise on the issue.
