Oelwein family recieves father’s war medals

November 12, 2001 By admin

An Oelwein family had a very special Veterans Day. Congressman Jim Nussle presented military medals to the widow and family of World War Two veteran Alphonse Macke at the American Legion yesterday. Beverly Engler, Macke’s daughter, was instrumental in seeking the medals after seeing on tv that it was possible.Nussle, a republican from Manchester, says this Veterans Day takes on more significance following the terrorist attacks on September 11th and the military action now underway.Medals for Macke included the combat infantry medal, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He served in Okinawa in 1945 and was wounded in combat. He died of cancer earlier this year.
