VFW continues strong in Iowa

November 12, 2001 By admin

About 300-thousand Iowans are military veterans — even a few World War II vets are still alive. Many older veterans are active in the 210 V-F-W posts around the state, according to Terry Lipovac, service officer for the state “Veterans of Foreign Wars” organization. He says the membership seems to increase as people get older and have more timed to get involved. The V-F-W does more than run that local bar. The organization lobbies for veterans benefits, and Lipovac’s full-time job is to help veterans and their families get pensions, job training and other federal benefits. Sunday was “Veteran’s Day” but some celebrations will be held yet today. Lipovac says the current war doesn’t change the way veterans view the holiday. He says it is important that veterans have been singled out to be honored, and that’s enough.Lipovac served 25 years in the Army.
