Cyclones and Hawkeyes find themselves in the same spot this week

November 14, 2001 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes can clinch their first winning season since 1997 with a victory at home over Minnesota on Saturday. Iowa is 5-4 after a lopsided win over Northwestern and coach Kirk Ferentz says the table is set for an exciting finish to the season.Ferentz says he learned quickly how important Floyd of Rosedale was when he joined Hayden Fry’s staff as an assistant. He says he thought it was kind of silly to have such trophies, but he says he’ll never forget it when the Gophers beat Iowa in 1981 and came after the trophy.Ferentz says improved depth of the team has come through in the past couple of weeks as numerous starters have battle injuries. He says they’ve had some good success with those who’ve filled in and gotten experience.Iowa State can lock-up a winning season with a victory at Kansas. Cyclones coach Dan McCarney says the Cyclones need to shake off the effects of a three-game losing streak, by regrouping, recommitting and putting out a great effort this week.McCarney says the Cyclones could still have a great finish. He says players have told him they’d have done anything to be in this position before last year.McCarney says Kansas’ 2-7 record is deceptive and the Cyclones will need a great effort to post a victory.
