Eastern Iowa companies announce layoffs

November 14, 2001 By admin

Two eastern Iowa workplaces are announcing layoff plans. About 165 workers at two eastern Iowa companies will be idled in the next few weeks. Terex Cranes in Waverly will lay off 95 workers, nearly half its workforce, next Wednesday, blaming current economic conditions. If the company goes through with plans to retool and expand, those workers may be called back. In Ackley, the Chiquita processed-foods plant will close its doors in January, moving its equipment to larger factories to reduce costs and selling the Iowa factory. Chiquita packages sweetcorn and dried beans. 70 workers at the Ackley plant will be laid off.
