The Iowa Department of Human Services is making changes at two mental hospitals after a review by the U-S Justice Department. D-H-S spokesman Roger Munns says preliminary information from the report is spurring changes at the hospitals in Glenwood and Woodward. They’re changing their procedures to do a better job of coordinating the efforts of psychologists and psychiatrists at the two hospitals. Munns says they want to do a better job of matching the behavioral practices with the use of medication. Munns says the changes are underway as part of a continuing change in operations.Munns says it’s a change in their policy, not any change in the people carrying out the policies. Munns says the operation of such facilities have changed dramatically in the last 20 years, and these changes are a continuation of that process.Munns says the full Justice Department report on the facilities will be out later this fall.
