Catholic church uses priest poster to recruit

November 23, 2001 By admin

Step into a Catholic church in southwest Iowa this weekend and you’ll probably see priests who’ve become poster boys for a recruiting campaign. The Des Moines Diocese has pictures of 10 priests they label on the poster as “interesting guys”. Father John Acrea of the Des Moines Diocese has two hopes for the poster project. One, young people would see priests are just like others, and parents would say the same thing.Acrea says the ten young priests featured have varied interests and backgrounds. Acrea says the church desperately needs new priests, and they believe there are plenty available if they show them what the “life is like.”Acrea himself decided to become a priest when he was a senior in high school. One thousand posters were printed and distributed to Catholic schools as well as parishes. Other dioceses around the country are using posters as recruitment tools.
