DNR says "Green" gifts save landfill space

November 23, 2001 By admin

The Department of Natural Resources is asking you to think “Green” when you head out today to buy holiday gifts. Spokesperson Merry Rankin says if everyone reduces their weekly holiday waste by one pound, it’ll keep 25-thousand tons of waste out of Iowa landfills. Rankin says there are a lot of little things you can do to prevent waste. She suggests bringing your own shopping bags to the store, or buying rechargeable batteries rather than the throw away kind. Rankin says you can save a lot of money and waste on Christmas cards.Rankin says you can go paperless and send electronic cards instead of the paper version. Rankin says you should look for gifts that contain recycled materials, and she says there are a lot of them on the market.Rankin says you can help save gas by inviting friends to car pool with you as you go on your shopping trips.
