We’re safer than you thought, according to astronomers. ISU Physics Professor Leanne Willson explains a recent report saying earth is less likely than scientists had thought to be hit by a meteor. Willson explains the good news was a byproduct of a survey aimed at a larger subject, a long term study dubbed the “Slow and Digital Sky Survey.”They take pictures of the sky looking for very faint things, like distant galaxies. But while mapping stars, Willson says researchers saw other patterns. Some of the faint things they saw were asteroids, and there weren’t as many as they thought so we’re safer than we’d thought. Though adventure films have dealt with wild scenarios for steering away an asteroid big enough to destroy the earth, Willson says scientists haven’t known before how much threat space junk might pose.
