A graphic artist from central Iowa plans to unveil a collection of posters this week, designed to raise Americans’ spirits in the war on terrorism. John Sayles, of Sayles Graphic Design in Des Moines, says the 30 posters harken back to the style of those used during World War Two.One poster features Uncle Sam with a black eye with the words: “Weep, Remember, But Fear Not.” Many of the banners utilize red, white and blue, bold type, stars, eagles and flags. Sayles says he was inspired to design the series of posters after the terrorist attacks, urging people to remember September 11th in the same vein as Pearl Harbor. He says he was strongly influenced by the style of the 1940s posters.Posters in that day tried to inspire people to “Buy War Bonds”, warned “Loose Lips Sink Ships” and touted the abilities of women in factory jobs with the character Rosie the Riveter. Sayles hopes his posters can become part of a national tour that could raise money, inspire vigilance and send a message about the Midwestern attitude.Sayles says he hopes art can be used to heal a wounded nation. Proceeds will benefit relief efforts and Iowa men and women serving in the armed forces. The posters will debut Friday night at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines at a charity event with a silent auction. They’ll be on display through the weekend and are visible at “www.ArtFightsBack.com”.
