Fraternity offers scholarships for African-American men

December 3, 2001 By admin

A fraternity at Drake University in Des Moines is again planning to award scholarships to 10 African-American men from Iowa. Ron Mells leads the program for the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which he says is an effort to help a group that’s underrepresented.Mells says any African-American man living in the state is eligible. They are looking across the entire state for African-American men who’ll be entering college this fall. Mells says this is the fourth year the fraternity has partnered with Drake to give out the scholarships.Mells says the scholarship is a combination of federal and state grants along with matching money contributed by the fraternity and Drake University. Mells says there’s more than money that goes with the scholarships once the students enroll. The scholarship also includes guidance to help the students prepare for their life after college. For more information, contact the Drake admissions office at 515-271-2092.
