Republican Congressman Greg Ganske is taking aim at democrat Senator Tom Harkin’s stewardship of the Farm Bill. Ganske, who plans to challenge Harkin’s 2002 re-election bid, says Harkin has failed farmers in his new position as chairman of the Senate Ag Committee. He says it was “very unfortunate that Harkin in July didn’t speed up the process, in fact slowed it down on the Senate side.”Ganske says Harkin hasn’t shown good leadership on the issue. He says Senators have told him they tried to work with Harkin to fashion compromises, but ended up unhappy.Ganske says Harkin hasn’t shown a willingness to work with Republicans. He says Harkin shouldn’t be playing political football.Ganske says by failing to get the Farm Bill passed this year, Harkin will cost Iowa farmers as the new budget realities in Washington will govern any bill drafted in 2002.
