President Bush has come out against the Farm Bill crafted by democrat Senator Tom Harkin, chairman of the U-S Senate’s Ag Committee. Iowa Republicans staged a telephone conference call this morning to re-state Bush’s objections. State Senator Thurman Gaskill, a republican from Corwith says they’re concerned its exceeding W.T.O. subsidization limits.Bush is pushing an alternative that would dump crop subsidies and instead give farmers fixed annual payments. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the Farm Bill on Monday, but Harkin says it may too late to get the legislation through the Senate and strike a compromise with House Republicans.Harkin says all but one section of the Farm Bill crafted by the Senate Ag Committee was approved unanimously by democrats and republicans.
