The director of Iowa’s Department of Human Services says the reorganization plan for her agency may boost the problem-solving abilities of social workers. D-H-S director Jesse Rasmussen says having workers together gives them other people to discuss a case with.An American Humane Association report made after the beating death of a Spirit Lake toddler cited the D-H-S for failing to have adequate supervision for front-line social workers. Rasmussen says by consolidating county offices, supervisors will be in the same office as front-line workers who review child abuse allegations. The reorganization plan does not lay-off front-line social workers who deal directly with the public, but instead gets rid of supervisors. It calls for closing some D-H-S offices and putting others on part-time status.
