A ceremony at the State Historical Building today honored Iowa survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Members of the Des Moines Hoover choir sang patriotic songs at the ceremony to men and women who were just about their age when Pearl Harbor was attacked 60 years ago. Those veterans are stooped and gray now, but most like Scottie Eberly of Lamoni still vividly remember that day. He was on board the U-S-S Pennsylvania as the planes came in that Sunday. Eberly says while the men on the front lines paid a heavy price, he thinks things were toughest on those back home. He cites his wife as an example. His wife didn’t know what was going on, and says the mailman told his wife the next day that she must be a widow. Eberly says ceremonies like the one today are important so that today’s kids can remember what happened.
