At least one education leader isn’t concerned about talk by the Governor and Legislature over possibly suspending a plan to raise teacher pay due to a tight budget. Bruce Lear is the director of the Sioux City Education Association. Lear says it wouldn’t be a bad idea to significantly overhaul the current plan, as he says it has a lot of problems.Lear says the wording of the plan is difficult to understand and he says it doesn’t really measure up in terms of increasing average pay. Lear says legislators should use the budget problem to review the plan.Lear says suspending the pay increase would be a one-time hit to teachers, and not make a long-term impact anyway. The current plan is designed to gradually increase teacher pay while raising performance standards.
