Investigators have released a few more details on the death of a young North Central Iowa girl, who died just before Christmas. Five-year-old Katie Vorland of Ventura died Monday at University Hospitals in Iowa City of injuries apparently sustained when she was playing outside with the family dog, a Doberman. Emergency crews were called to the home on Sunday. An investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department indicates the dog may have dragged the child by her scarf, causing her injuries. Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Dodd says the evidence at the scene indicates it appears to be accidental. Authorities say Katie’s parents, David and Laurie Vorland, were not present when she was injured. The Iowa Department of Human Services has asked the sheriff to look into the circumstances that led to the child’s death. Agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are also on the case. Results of an autopsy aren’t expected till after January 4th.
