The Olympic Torch Relay will blaze a path through Council Bluffs this afternoon, its only appearance in the Hawkeye State. 25 runners from Iowa and four other states will carry the flame along a five-mile route, each running two-tenths of a mile. Only the flame will be passed relay style, not the torches. Run coordinator Cati DeMasi says the batons are beautiful two-color silver symbolizing the past and the future.A glass ball at the top contains the butane/propane mix of fuel, spouting a five-inch flame that isn’t supposed to go out.The runners got sponsors to buy individual torches for 350-dollars each. DeMasi says the events begin around 12:30 p-m and will last about two hours, though the actual running of the torch will take a matter of minutes. There’ll be bands, choirs, flag bearers and speeches by Governor Vilsack and other dignitaries as the Olympic flame makes its brief light in Iowa before heading west, toward Salt Lake City.
