A six-year-old West Des Moines girl was rescued last night after falling through the ice on her apartment complex pond. State officials says fishermen, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers and anyone else who might be out on the ice should probably stay off, especially across the state’s southern third. D-N-R fisheries bureau chief Marion Conover says the ice simply isn’t safe now in many areas.Conover says three ice fishermen fell through the ice this week in Union County alone. All three survived. This week’s warm weather has seriously sliced the ice, and Conover says it has to be much thicker to be safe.Conover says the ice needs to be at least two inches thick for individuals, four inches for groups, six inches for snowmobiles and eight-to-ten inches for vehicles.
