Governor says more layoffs could be ahead for state workers

January 12, 2002 By admin

Hundreds of state workers have lost their jobs during the state budget crisis, and up to 300 more will likely be laid off in the coming months. There were 24-thousand workers in the executive branch a year and a half ago, and Governor Tom Vilsack says 1,285 will have been laid off by the end of February.Vilsack says depending on what he and the legislature agree on, 200, 300 or even more workers probably will be let go.Vilsack says there’s a chance the current year’s state budget will have to be cut again. Vilsack spoke with reporters for nearly an hour yesterday to talk about the budget.
