Iowa kids who are a “cut above the rest” are subject of a search by the Institute for Character Development at Drake University. The organization is taking nominations for the American Youth Character Awards. Kitty Olsen, the Institute’s development director says they’re looking for kids who exhibit the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Olsen says Iowa youngsters can be nominated by anyone, be it family, teachers, friends or someone in their religious group.Olsen says there are three age groups where awards will be presented: ten-12, 13-15 and 16-18. The awards are designed to honor young people whose lives and achievements show a commitment to qualities associated with good character. She says it’s usually a difficult chore narrowing down winners.Nomination forms are available at: “www.drake.edu/icd” or by calling the Institute for Character Development at (515) 271-1910. The deadline to enter is March first. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in May.
