As part of a can-do effort to whip hunger in Iowa, “Can-struction” is underway this morning at a Des Moines shopping mall. Teams from around the region are building all sorts of objects almost entirely out of canned food. It promises to be a real visual treat for mall-walkers. Sue Wallace, is one of the organizers of Can-struction. She says each team of builders has come up with an unusual item, landmark or structure to build out of colorful cans. The objects will be built this morning and will be left up at Merle Hay Mall for a week. Next weekend, they’ll all be dismantled and the food will be donated to the Food Bank of Iowa. Wallace says this is the only Can-struction project in the state, but there are 55 events underway today across the U-S and Canada. The Food Bank of Iowa serves 325 non-profit groups, pantries and shelters in 42 Iowa counties.
