Senators will debate a bill this week that would let kids work in car washes. The bill’s a response to a decision by the State Labor Commissioner which has bars minors from working in car washes. Commissioner Byron Orton says he issued the edict because of the chemicals that’re used in car washes.Orton says some of the chemicals used in car wash facilities have a National Fire Protection Association grade of dangerous, extremely dangerous and deadly. Orton says the chemicals can cause serious burns, severe eye injury, and respiratory illness. He says there are also concerns about mixing the hazardous materials and he doesn’t think kids should work around that danger. Car wash owners, car dealerships and some legislators say not all car wash employees use chemicals, and kids should be able to fill the jobs of wiping down and cleaning cars.
