Biblical Scholar urges Iowans to "Take Back the Bible"

February 13, 2002 By admin

A biblical scholar says the “good book” has been kidnapped.Phyllis Trible, an internationally-known biblical scholar, says the Bible’s “in bondage” to many groups, on the right and the left, to those, as she says “who want to bash it, and groups who want to thump it.” Trible spoke last night at a Drake University student center and urged Christians to “take back the Bible.” Trible says there’s nothing wrong with looking in scriptures thousands of years old for guidance today. Trible doesn’t have any easy answers for those who would recast scriptures in modern or gender-free language. She says translation puts the Bible into the language of the people, but doesn’t necessarily change it into what people want to hear. Trible says you can find things in the Bible to back up any point of view. Trible’s a professor of divinity at Wake Forest and has written several books.
