The U-S House may vote as soon as today on a measure that aims to clean up misleading, negative political advertising. Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell is co-sponsoring the legislation which he says aims to restore the public’s confidence in the democratic process. Boswell, a democrat from Davis City, says he was a target of such a negative ad campaign by drug companies because he supported programs for more affordable prescription drugs for senior citizens. He says the drug companies adopted a name to “mask their true identity and hidden agenda” to mislead the public on the important issue. He says if “unscrupulous groups like these continue to operate on the fringes of legality and grossly violate the spirit of campaign finance laws and decency, the democratic process will continue to be subject to subversion by special interest money.”Boswell isn’t sure if the bipartisan measure will pass but says he’s hopeful republicans will join in taking “a giant step forward toward restoring the public’s faith.”
