Legislators got more bad budget news today. The U-S Supreme Court has refused to hear a case appealed by the state of Iowa, and it’ll cost the state millions. Workers in the Department of Public Safety have filed four separate lawsuits, seeking backpay and overtime. Three cases are pending, but the fourth was appealed all the way to the U-S Supreme Court, which today sided with the workers. House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, says the Supreme Court’s decision makes a bad budget situation worse.Siegrist says lawmakers hope to be able to negotiate a settlement with the workers, spreading the cost over several years. The four lawsuits could cost the state up to 30-million dollars.
