Kids charged with vehicular homicide or making a bomb threat would automatically be tried in adult court if a bill that cleared the House Judiciary Committee becomes law. Republican Representative Clel Baudler of Greenfield says bomb scares are upsetting and costly. He says juvenile justice is an oxymoron and kids would have no punishment there, so he wants to send a message by putting them in adult court. Democrat Representative Bill Witt of Cedar Falls, who voted against the measure, says it doesn’t make sense to lump two very different crimes together in the bill. He says vehicular homicide isn’t the same as a kid with spring fever or one who hasn’t studied for a test and decides to phone or e-mail a phony bomb threat. The full house will next debate the bill.
