The U-S Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case challenging Internet sex-offender registries. Iowa’s one of many states that post the names of convicted sex offenders on its state website, but Roxanne Ryan in the Iowa Attorney General’s office says whatever the high court rules, it’s not likely to affect Iowa’s system. She says the Iowa law’s different from the Alaska one, so the Supreme Court could strike theirs down and leave ours intact. Ryan says the appeals court that struck down Alaska’s law found it was too broad. The limitations are on who qualifies for public notification, and how long they’re listed. You can search Iowa’s registry by name or address, so you can look up the last known whereabouts of a particular offender, or search for any in your neighborhood.
