Attorneys General from Iowa and 22 other states have pressured A-T-and-T, WorldCom/M-C-I and Sprint — the nation’s three largest long distance companies to change their t-v commercials. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says there were three major problems with long distance company ads touting the per-minute charges; the companies often implied their per minute rates were good all day, when the cheaper rates were only applied at night. The companies failed to clearly say the cheaper rate did not apply to long-distance calls within the state and there was often a monthly fee in addition to the per-minute charge. The agreement with the big three phone companies went into effect this past weekend, and they’ve pledged to make their t-v ad pitches clearer. But Miller says consumers still need to shop around and see which long distance plan is best for them.
