Legislature to consider plan for people who want to pay more taxes

March 4, 2002 By admin

This week, legislators will consider a proposal first launched by a southern state’s Governor to rebuff democrats. In December, Arkansas’ republican Governor established a special state account Arkansas residents could make a deposit in — if they wanted to pay MORE taxes. The move was a response to a call from democrats to raise taxes to help ease that state’s budget situation. A few hundred dollars has trickled into the account since then, exactly the response the republican Governor wanted. Now, Iowa’s republican legislators are proposing a similar account in Des Moines to help prove their point Iowans don’t want to pay higher taxes. However, democrat Governor Tom Vilsack has never suggested raising taxes as policymakers struggle with budget problems
