The 42-year-old republican running for Iowa’s redrawn third district congressional seat says 68-year-old Congressman Leonard Boswell, a democrat, is a candidate of the past. Stan Thompson, a lawyer from Des Moines, today
formally declared his intention to challenge Boswell in the General Election.
Thompson says Boswell, a farmer and retired military officer who just moved
to Des Moines, isn’t the right fit for the new third district.
Thompson has lived in Des Moines for the past 17 years, and
he says since the metro is two-thirds of the district, he would better
represent the area.
Thompson was endorsed today by his former republican challenger, State
Auditor Richard Johnson, who withdrew from the race last week. Johnson says he’ll retire from public life at the end of his term as Auditor, a post he’s held since 1979.
