The school nurse is a vanishing breed, but a replacement may be on the Internet. The school nurse might be on the Internet, for small rural districts that can’t hire a professional. Dennis Jensen with “INET” says he created the program to link a worldwide doctor-training program with rural clients who need those brains. It’s become the richest and probably oldest online library resource on the Internet, and is based in Wayne, Nebraska. Jensen says A-E-T was already training doctors in Cairo, Egypt with satellite, video and hi-speed Internet distance education when he helped forge the link to public schools. A-E-T had resources like 75 health professionals at different colleges so help comes from nurses and doctors. Jensen says when a sick kid comes to the principal’s office, she can be looked at by video-link and diagnosed by a real doctor. As a former superintendent, he’s seen the “nurse dilemma” and had to cope with the shortage. INET has signed up its first schools in Nebraska and Jensen says rural and small Iowa schools are a natural for the Internet school-nurse program, too.
